Upon visiting the future in-laws in Terre Haute for their 60th birthday celebrations, we decided to spend our Saturday out on the town... and by "out on the town" I mean a stop at the Sprint store for a new cell phone, a stop at the cupcake shop for some cupcakes and a stop at Clabber Girl Bake Shop for some lunch, which was obviously before the cupcake place. Clabber Girl had been the talk of the community as a great place for lunch, so based on all of the recommendations we decided to give it a shot. The shop itself is pretty cool, there's a large museum, the bake shop itself and then a large dining room to sit in. We only ate lunch and cookies this time so that's all I can comment on, but everything was amazing. Nobody in our group had the same thing so we got to experience almost all of the lunch menu and there were absolutely no complaints. Personally I had the Indiana Pulled Pork. I love me some good pulled pork and Clabber Girl's pulled pork ranks up there with some of the best I've had. I was also a huge fan of the BBQ sauce. While I'm not a huge fan of the vinegar based BBQ sauces, the other (molasses based?) sauce was absolutely delicious. The two cookies we got, oatmeal and something with a marshmallow in the center, were also both amazing so I'm not quite sure what the previous reviews experienced, but I can honestly say that we enjoyed everything we ordered. The only complaint that anyone had was that the coffee was WAY too hot. Almost to the point where she had to put an ice cube in it as it was not drinkable. We stuck around for awhile to chat and walked through the museum so the coffee eventually cooled down, but she couldn't even pick it up without two of those little cardboard things around the cup. Either way though, if our only complaint about all the food we got was hot coffee, I think this place is doing alright. I highly recommend the Indiana Pulled Pork if you make it over to Clabber Girl for lunch. We had to go to lunch at a BBQ place on Monday because I still had a taste for it.

There is literally no better place in Terre Haute to sip a well-brewed coffee, perhaps enjoy a pastry & read, relax, or tap away on your laptop. Forget Starbucks- they have nothing on this place when it comes to atmosphere. There are 3 rooms to choose from (front has items for sale & a loud TV on, but the other 2 are quiet with plenty of places to sit). And how nice to be in a museum that celebrates the history of Terre Haute (and of course Clabber Girl) on top of it all. Neat, neat, neat- not to be missed.

We booked Clabber Girl to cater our wedding because of the great food and amazing recommendations. We told them exactly what we wanted for the wedding and how many would be attending. We were told that we would have to get more room for them to work (which, of course, meant more money) and we did. We made all of the arrangements to allow them to have the room and everything they needed for our big day. About one month before the wedding we received emails from them expressing their doubts about making their catering work. After the extra money and everything else, they wouldn't return our calls and/or voicemails but they could email us to tell us that they were backing out at the last minute. Needless to say, I was more than disappointed and more than angry. This professional business was a joke and I will never recommend them to anybody.

I have to start out by stating how much I enjoy the atmosphere. All that old fashion WWll era stuff is awesome. The food is good but a bit expensive considering the small portions they give you. Not to mention the earlier you go the better. I've been there sereral times and I've noticed that in the afternoon some things are taken out of the cooler and just nuked in the microwave. The service, however, has always been good. And the coffee is top notch. But I've noticed that their Double X blend hasn't been what it used to be. It used to have a good smokey taste, not to mention I can't really taste the choclate notes in the roast. And that sucks, because that used to be my favorite blend. But overall its a great place to eat.

Great place to get some work done. I was staying in Terre Haute for several days and needed a quiet place to work for a few hours at a time. Clabber Girl was perfect. It's not too busy and they have plenty of tables and space along with reliable wifi. It's a great, laid back atmosphere for breakfast, lunch and a little work. For food, the breakfast sandwiches are great as are the biscuits and gravy. I had the pulled pork sandwich for lunch one day and it was a bit dry, but everything else I had over three days was pretty good. I'm not a coffee drinker, but my parents rave about the Rex coffee and the memorabilia showcased in the adjacent museum is a plus if you're into history.

Part of our family visited the museum, previously, and today they returned with others, to dine at this "CAFE." This place is 1st class, with it's restored rooms, decorated very tastefully, clean & comfortable. The servers were very courteous, helpful, & classy. The menu was 1st class, with gourmet menu items, with ALL enjoying their selections. This is an "Order at the Counter" type of service, and the very gracious servers brought our food to our table. We will be back !!!

Great vibe for a quaint off the beaten path high end luncheonette that has fresh coffee. Wish I had one in indy!!!

I had breakfast here with a couple friends on a Saturday morning for a meeting. Food is ordered from a counter. The breakfast menu seemed limited; I guess I was expecting a lot more options. Either way, I went with biscuits and gravy. They had a few breakfast sandwiches that I almost went with, but didn't. They featured their biscuits so I was curious how their B&G fared. It was good. Not smack-yo-mama good...but good. The place was empty. During our 2 hour stay, there was about 10 other people...maybe. So we didn't feel rushed at all. They have a lot of old school memorabilia on the walls and tons of seating. With big windows facing the street and open space, the feel was relaxing. If you're looking for bacon, eggs, and grits this isn't your place. But it was a nice change up to the other breakfast spots. Guys, you'll score big points if you take your girl here. It's kinda got that bed and breakfast kinda feel. Overall, pretty good spot. I think I'll take the wife here sometime.

The Clabber Girl Bake Shop is a bit of a disappointment, especially since it's inside the fabulous Clabber Girl museum. It's an order-at-the-counter, pick it up kind of scene. We came here for lunch and then breakfast to try out both. The salads which we had were just okay. One was cranberry-orange with chicken, served on a plastic plate with a plastic tub of dressing that was a bit acidic. The other was Mediterranean. The chicken was fresh, which was great, but the lettuce was clearly old and looked dehydrated. I would not recommend lunch. For breakfast, we sampled their breakfast egg sandwiches. You get a choice of the type of bread you can order. We decided to try their biscuits, made with the famed Clabber Girl baking powder. They were dry but okay. The eggs, however, were clearly made in the microwave and were flabby and like plastic. I would not recommend that! The coffee was served in take out cups rather than mugs, even though we were eating there. Why? This place is clearly trying to get away with the least amount of effort. Their cookies, however, are buttery and flaky. They were good. Very decent. We ordered their famed Rex Coffee, which is roasted right on the premises! It was a bit weak compared to what we're used to in Portland, OR, however, it wasn't bad. Clabber Girl Bake Shop has the opportunity to be a destination point, a very desirable cafe, if only they would take it as seriously as their museum! I could imagine a kitchen in the back where they actually make the eggs on a stove (just like in the olden days!), and put the food on decent plates that aren't plastic. The cookies are pretty good, and putting those out under glass trays would be very enticing. Lastly, getting some people behind the counter who really care and are passionate about the history of Clabber Girl would be awesome, too. Lastly, the cafe has tvs with modern shows on. YUCK! This is not a sports bar, people! Why not have dvds of the history of Clabber Girl going, if you're going to have the tv on at all! In short: it's nice they have a bake shop in the museum, but it's subpar compared to the museum (and they could stand to take some biscuit making lessons from Cracker Barrel!). ;)

Came here for breakfast on a April Friday morning. Got biscuits & gravy. The biscuits were really good but the gravy seemed to be a little salty. And the gravy was a bit spicy too. Coffee was good and stout, not bitter.

For a historical, must see of Terre Haute this place is rather hard to see because there is about zero signage - maybe I'm just getting old, but I was expecting some building with a cool old vintage advertisement painted on the building or a big sign marking the place as a museum etc. There is a little sign off the side, and that's about it. Parking is street, which can be tricky with the insane quantity of one-ways around the old downtown. The museum consists of some items behind cases, mostly war-time era pieces. Cool to check out, but nothing vast or mind blowing. I felt like I was missing something? I was hoping for more content about the actual product and less about the Hulman family and war rations. I was kinda bummed. The cafe is small but has a huge seating area. There are some food items for sale and canned goods in the lobby region for sale, but nothing that really screamed Clabber Girl or anything. I just didn't see the big deal. I was hoping for something more - this wasn't really worth the trip.

Great place for early morning breakfast and checking email on my laptop. Always VERY clean dining room and bathrooms, too. Lots of cookies and other baked goods to choose from. I suggest the maple bacon biscuit with orange butter and a REX coffee. For lunch, I go with the Indiana pulled pork sandwich with voodoo flavored chips.

Little did I realize I was in the home of the famous baking powder company, and then I saw the logo as I went here for lunch with a group of coworkers. This review is separated into a lunch review [2 stars] and a breakfast review [4 stars]. If you're a fan of ranch, which a lot of people are, you'll probably be a fan of a lot of their sandwiches. Personally I don't like the stuff so I ordered a sandwich which didn't have a drop of it included, and maybe this is where I went wrong. The flavors fought with each other more than Ron Artest and Detroit Pistons fans [ youtu.be/N37H1kSDvJc?t=1… ], which forced me to look between the bread. There I was looking around acting like I knew what I was doing trying to find the culprit without succeeding. The bread was soft and delightful but the meats and toppings just didn't cut it. So sad. Then I go there for breakfast to try their granola. Very good as it screams with a fresh baked crunch as it is served with yogurt and fresh fruit. It was a terrific way to start a morning as the fresh fruit blended so nicely with the honey kissed granola and creaminess of the yogurt. They also offer oatmeal, an egg breakfast sandwich and biscuits & gravy. The restaurant itself doubles as a small museum and has historic items on display including a full sized indy car. You can see how people used to live in yester year as you stroll through the museum section checking out replica rooms and artifacts. There is plenty of seating, but the seats are hard wood and will probably get uncomfortable if you want to read the paper while finishing your coffee. There is some street parking and a lot right across 9th street which offers ample parking. Remember that 9th is one way.

This place has it all! One of the best atmospheres in Terre Haute! The Indiana Pulled Pork on the Pretzel Bun was PERFECT. So flavorful and a good portion too. I have also had their Turkey Bacon Ranch on Texas Toast and it really hit the spot! Now onto the sweets! WOW oh WOW! Their muffins and scones are FRESH, TASTY, and oh so sinful! Don't count calories when you are here! I am not a fan of coffee, I may have 3 cups a year. But when I am here, I have one. Their Cafe Au Lait is pure heaven. DO NOT pass this gem up if you are in Terre Haute. Great for kids, as you can walk the museum, see the train above your heads, and feel like you have stepped back in time. I LOVE this place and is one of my favorite places to go for lunch.

Clabber Girl keeps lunch diner hours (closes by 6pm) but the food is excellent. My favorite is the BBQ Chicken sandwich which is served with red onion and a side. They also serve Rex Coffee which is delicious and has a bold taste to it. The staff is always nice and, because they're also a bakery, you can typically request baked items and they'll have them for you within a few days. The next time you're in Terre Haute and are looking for a great lunch stop by Clabber Girl and treat yourself right.

I read both of the comments before mine, and I'm not sure why soo many negative comments about this place. I've eaten here for at least 3-4yrs; however, I do admit I've only ordered their lunch. I've never gotten any cookies or muffins or anything like that. I always get their BBQ Chicken Sandwich on a pretzel bun. The flavor is good, and the bread is toasty and warm. You can also pick a side with the sandwich, and I normally get either a side salad or soup. The side salad is a good size with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The service is a tad slow, but it doesn't bother me that much. Everytime I go to Terre Haute for work I will definitely stop by Clabber Girl for lunch. All my co-workers really like it too. Everytime I've been there for lunch, it's been pretty packed out with local business people. I doubt if a place was that bad that their business would still be that good. The museum is quite interesting and it's free. It's worth a look around.

This is a great place for lunch. The food is excellent and the employees are always nice and extremely helpful. The food is always made correctly and tastes great. My only complaint is that they don't have enough bread options. They used to have a delicious flatbread that was very popular with my friends and me but they took it off the menu. I would go more often if they brought it back, even if they had to charge extra. They also occasionally make a cuban black bean soup that's incredible.

I discovered the Clabber Girl Cafe and Museum while doing research for our driving trip from Indiana, PA to Colorado Springs, CO to visit my brother in Missouri and sister in Colorado. It sounded interesting, so I decided to have us stop here for lunch on our way west. I was travelling with my wife and my 79 year old mom and my 73 year old aunt. We ordered sandwiches for lunch and they were all good. I found it neat and interesting that the Bake Shop is also part of a Museum on Clabber Girl and Terre Haute history. My mom and aunt loved seeing the old kitchens in the museum part especially the one representing the 1940s. It reminded them of the kitchen of their youth. This will be a must stop for me whenever I am passing through again.

Fun place to stop in for lunch as part of a business trip. It was definitely worth stopping in to walk around, check out the historic Clabber Girl memorabilia, see what the hype was about. I had a coffee and a chicken salad sandwich. The Chicken Salad was edible, decent, but nothing to write home about. It was more "blah" than I had hoped for. The coffee wasn't great, either, and they didn't have any milk available - just cream. I stopped in to break up my business trip a bit and do something interesting. I am glad I checked it out, but I probably won't be back.

Things started out so well, with an array of nice-looking cookies, and in a baking museum, you'd think they'd be pretty good. They were adequate. (In what I hope was a gesture of kindness the clerks nudged us away from the stale snickerdoodles toward chocolate chip.) Still, they were the best part. Beverage service was spottier: They wouldn't provide milk for the coffee, only cream. They couldn't tell us whether any of their teas were herbal or decaffeinated. At that point we gave up and went to Coffee Grounds.
